My Attachment Experience

Industrial attachment is a vital part of a course that every student needs so that they can be prepared for the real work once they are done with the course.

I got a chance at Msenangu fm,one of the most popular radio stations in coast. My first day was quite smooth since it was all about orientation and getting familiar with everyone.

"Good morning,I am Justice Lang'at and I am the head of content in this place, feel at home and cooperate with your leaders in the news room" Mr. Lang'at said. I gave my appreciation and disappeared to the news room since I wasn't really comfortable standing before the boss who was looking straight into my eyes.

The next day I was the early bird at work and I was determined to face the day with so much zeal and enthusiasm. I sat for the editorial meeting which was meant to be done every morning and to my utter surprise, everyone on the table was giving out a story idea and then there was me,very clueless.

"Young girl say something!"Yelled Maitha Masha who was the Editor general and the head of the news room. At this point I began feeling butterflies in my stomach and tears welling up my eyes. I couldn't even mumble a word and then I suddenly heard,"meeting closed" Masha adjourned the meeting since I had nothing to say. It wasn't an easy day.

Later in the day Salim Moyo my supervisor called me and we had a very good talk and he took me through the process of learning how to generate story ideas from current affairs and also scripting news. Moyo was a gentle calm and caring man and so he made me feel comfortable asking questions and as we ended the talk he stood a gave me a gentle pat on my shoulder saying,"Please get used to Masha that's him and he won't change."

Given that Moyo already took me through,my first two weeks were quite a smooth ride as I did not lack a story idea and my news scripts were not as bad as I had began though I must say I tried to avoid Masha by all means,I detested him I guess.

I had  challenges at times with stubborn sources who never wanted to speak but I was able to manage it with the help of my supervisor. The journey was rocky at some point but rosy too and having completed the three months attachment period that's from January 31 to April 31st I harnessed a lot.
