EYE OF THE PEOPLE
The media plays a vital role in fighting for the welfare of the citizens of Kenya. I can not imagine Kenya without the media,I mean the several wonders that the media has been able to expose is dumbfounding. Through their reporting, journalists are able to expose injustices done by those in power and they give a voice to the voiceless. One of the most significant examples of this is the Shakahola massacre.
Over five hundred bodies have been exhumated from Shakahola and that's just a figure given to the media, are you convinced that the government is telling us the truth? Or maybe do you think it is just the controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie involved? As for me I still have questions but then the media has done it's best in exposing the dirty work at Shakahola that would have been swept under the rug .
Let's talk about the demonstrations that were led by the Azimio la Umoja leader,Raila Odinga that were actually supposed to be peaceful but then what happened? The police happened! Teargas happened!Bullets happened! and sadly death happened! Innocent blood was shed. If the police had not provoked the multitude that was peacefully demonstrating then none of these would have happened. Furthermore it's only the presence of the media that made police officers to stop the merciless killings but otherwise...
Without the media, the citizens of Kenya would not have known about the killings and am really grateful that it was all about live broadcasting so that they would not have complained that it was Photoshop and the likes.
The media also plays a crucial role in exposing corruption and holding those in power accountable. Through investigative reporting, journalists are able to uncover cases of embezzlement, bribery, and other forms of corruption. Let's have flashbacks on the NYS issue do you think we would have known it without the media?
Besides all that, the media also brings awareness on different diseases that are slowly consuming people's lives a good example is the rotavirus disease killing children. The media ensures that you love healthy and take good measures in case of anything.
However, the media in Kenya is not without its challenges. Journalists often face harassment, intimidation, and even violence for their reporting. This is a clear indication that those in power are threatened by the media's ability to expose the truth. Our journalists need protection what they do is risky I mean their job is almost equal to the undercover police agents.
In conclusion, the media is part and parcel of us. We depend on them big time and they need our support. They act as our eyes out there and our voice. As a nation it is high time we stand for the freedom of press.
